The CEO of a large company stood nervously in front of the general assembly of the company’s employees. With a tremble in his voice, he made the difficult announcement, “Due to the economic crisis, we have to close down the company”. To his surprise, his announcement was met with an applause from the employees.

Baffled, he clarified the announcement, “This company will have to let you go.” More cheers as the employees started exchanging “high-fives”.

Completely bewildered, he decided to be more direct, “You will lose your jobs!” This time, the employees gave a standing ovation.

At the end of his short announcement, the perplexed CEO asked one of the employees, “Did you hear what I just announced?”

With a big grin on his face, the employee answered, “No, sir. We did not hear a single word you said. We have been listening to the radio. Pacquiao won!”

What are you listening to everyday — the voice of victory or the voice of defeat?

There is one power which you possess and that is the power to choose what you listen to.

Sure, there are many noises in the world today, and sometimes we feel like helpless victims to all the negativity around us. But remember this: you always have a choice not to listen to everything you hear. Listening requires focus and retention. And you possess the power to choose what to focus on and what to retain in your mind.

What you listen to becomes you. If you listen to negative conversation, you can become negative. If you listen to discouraging words, you become discouraged. If you listen to what’s wrong with the world, you will notice many things wrong in your world.

But if you listen to what’s inspiring and what’s good, you become inspiring and good.

The bible says:

“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things.” (Philippians 4:8)

Don’t get me wrong, I am not promoting naivety but positivity. Read the papers. Listen to the news. Be conscious of the suffering so prevalent around us. Know the “bad news”. But saturate your mind with the Good News.

Today, choose to listen to what builds you up; to what edifies; to what inspires you to become the kind of person that God wants you to be.

Choose to listen to the Voice of Victory, and watch yourself become victorious every step of the way!
